Water Restoration Categories & Classes: Category 1 Water

In previous blogs, we’ve covered the various signs of water damage and how to choose the right water restoration company. In this new series of posts, we will be providing homeowners with some information about the various classifications of water damage.

Categories & Classes

When it comes to water restoration, water falls into 3 categories and 4 class types. The category refers to the source of the water and what it contains. The classes referred to how fast it will evaporate and what damage is caused. This rating system is produced by the IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification), which sets guidelines for the cleaning water damage and restoration training.

Category 1 Water - "Clean Water"

Category 1 Water - "Clean Water" sources include supply lines to your home’s toilets, sinks, refrigerators, dishwashers, tub or showers. These sources do not pose a large threat because the water is from a sanitary source. Just beware that Category 1 can rapidly turn into Category 2 – “Grey Water” because of contaminants on the floor or in walls and ceilings.
